Why the disparity over photos at Arlington Cemetery?

(Note: Published in "My Word" column in the Eureka Times-Standard, 9/13/2024. Written by Pamela Cosel. Photo by John Clarkson.)

I read with some disdain the My Word column in the Saturday, 9/7/24 issue of the ETS, Sherman Shapiro’s focus on Trump, with a title of “Undecided voters need to wake up.” Shapiro’s scolding of the former POTUS was inaccurate on so many points, but my focus here is about the memorial ceremony that Shapiro refers to, held at Arlington National Cemetery. Shapiro was wrong in stating that the visit was “to honor a soldier killed in the Kabul bombing 3 years ago…” It was more than that, not for just one fallen soldier, but for the 13 who died due to the Biden/Harris failures shortly after their election.

I assume what Shapiro is referring to is the Aug. 26 visit — where Trump was invited by the families of those 13 service people who died due to Biden’s screw-up of the withdrawal from Afghanistan early in Biden’s presidency. In fact, the families have never received a phone call from Harris, as stated in interviews I’ve seen on various TV news reports.

The arguments bashing Trump state that “no photos” are supposed to be taken at Arlington. Well, a simple online search shows numerous photos of Biden and Harris at the very same cemetery in years past, for wreath-laying ceremonies. What’s the difference? Also, Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox attended on Aug. 26 and posted photos of the ceremony and himself with the family members, on his social media pages — where’s the outrage there? Oh, that’s right — Dems only want to target Trump.

The Gold Star families have stated in online articles, “The Gold Star family members maintained that they had asked Trump for photographs, as opposed to Trump taking pictures to advance his campaign. In one video, the father of Marine Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz called Harris’ post “heinous, vile and disgusting.”

“Why did we want Trump there? It wasn’t to help his political campaign,” Mark Schmitz said in the video. “We wanted a leader. That explains why you and Joe didn’t get a call.” And another:  “In keeping with the reverence and respect that is given to all members of our military that are buried there, we invited President Trump,” he said. “We are the ones that asked for the video and the pictures to be taken at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.” In addition, Trump apparently was given authorization by certain cemetery staff to have a photographer there.

I’m tired of the Democrats twisting facts to create lies when they think they’re advancing the case for electing Harris. Just tell the Truth! That’s what’s wrong with our country these days — too many lies being spread. As for “waking up,” as Shapiro states, our country has gone entirely too “woke” during this current administration. I say to all voters: Do Your own Research — instead of just reading (inaccurate) headlines.

As a military mother of two sons who served — one for 20 years in the USAF and one for 5 years in the USN — I am lucky that neither of my sons were injured or killed. And yet, I indeed would have been honored to have a POTUS show up for a wreath-laying ceremony had it been necessary. And yes, we would have taken photos.
